Houston linebacker focusing on two
As the Houston Cougars opened camp last week to prepare for the upcoming season they continued to work on piecing together their 2012 recruiting class as well. With 12 verbal commitments thus far in the class they are already past the half way point of the class and are looking for specific players to round it out.
One player they have been chasing is Houston (TX) Bellaire linebacker Keith Ewing. Ewing was able to make it out last Saturday as the Cougars took the practice field for the second time.
"It was a good chance for me to see what kind of defense they run," said the 6-foot-1, 215 pound linebacker. "I like what I see because we run the same defense at Bellaire. I play on the outside right now but I think the colleges I have been talking to have been looking at me on the inside."
Ewing also shared his thoughts on the atmosphere that surrounded the Cougars practice session and the pace they keep up while on the field.
"I liked it a lot," he said. " I liked the intensity they had out there. They practice just like we do. I want to try and make it out to one more practice hopefully when they have full equipment on, but we are about to get real busy too."
Ewing continues to sort through the recruiting process and has pretty much narrowed his choices down to a couple suitors.
"I have been talking to Houston and Arizona and that is about it lately," said the three year starter at Bellaire. "I was talking to Texas A&M some and Arkansas but they have cooled off. I am just checking everything out still right now but Houston is standing out for me right now. It's close to home and my family could come to games but I am just going to wait it out a little bit more."
Although Ewing has narrowed down his focus some he wants to make a couple visits first early in the season before he makes his decision.
"I want to take some visits at the start of the season and then I will make my decision after our third game of the year," he told CougarsDen Sunday night.
With the Houston Independent School district being such a familiar stop for the Cougars, Ewing is familiar with a lot of the guys on the roster already.
"I know a lot of those guys," he said of the former HISD players. "Like the quarterback over there (freshman Bram Kohlhausen) he was at Lamar last year and (Earl) Foster."
Ewing was a first team all-district performer last season in district 20-5A.
