The IHSA Multiplier/Waiver & Public vs. Private Bracket Preview
Well the name pretty much sums this one up. Here we have our first real dose of the public vs private issue. I really don't care either way, the truly good teams will win out in the end. The bracket is led by some teams that have put up a lot of Ws this fall, in this case those teams being the Winnebago Indians and the Wilmington Wildcats. Winnebago has been getting better and better each season. The Indians look like they could make a run. However, the upper bracket is littered with good teams. For instance awaiting in round 2 could be the Fighting Irish of Bishop McNamara, whom are making their 32nd overall playoff appearance! The CCL White power has had a solid season and can never be counted out come playoff time. An interesting first round matchup pits two perennially strong teams in 12th seed Bloomington Central Catholic and 5th seed Stillman Valley. The Saints and Cardinals are both looking for a strong run in the postseason. Now, we will transition back to Wilmington real quick because we can't just automatically advance the Wildcats to the second round as their opponent 15th seed Oregon is not someone they can look past. Now we come to the game of games in 3A, at least for the first round, and that is Aurora Christian @ Immaculate Conception. Tons of coaches statewide had to breathe a sigh of relief after seeing that these two powerhouses got paired up in round 1. Aurora Christian was pounded by IC a few short weeks ago, and you have to think the Eagles have revenge on their mind. Aurora Christian is getting healthy and that chance at a 3 peat in 3A will be why we see a fantastic game between the Knights and Eagles. Lets not forget that Immaculate Conception is the most battle tested playoff team in the 3A field having faced 6 playoff teams during the regular season. One quick point about Al Raby as they may very well possess the best athlete in 3A in QB Jimmy Covington. I wouldn't be surprised to see Al Raby in the quarterfinals.
The Decatur Staleys Quad Preview
We could have gone with calling this the Okaw Quad, but with the Okaw sorta falling apart after this year I went in a different direction. Williamsville is the top seed and pretty much breezed through Sangamo Conference play, with the exception of their game with Auburn. I like the Bullets over Pana, but the quad gets tough! The quad also boast the always tough St. Teresa Bulldogs, last years 3A runner up Unity Rockets, the Monticello Eagles, and the St. Joseph-Ogden Spartans, who by the way are making their 23rd consecutive playoff appearance. So we can safely assume that no one is going to breeze through this quad. If I had to pick a favorite it is hard for me to go against Scott Hamilton and his Unity Rockets! The Rockets are always a tough opponent and have been to the semis multiple times.
The Casey's Have Four Star Pizza Preview
This quad has very good teams that are on a collision course as long as the seeds hold true. #1 seed Greenville and #2 seed Carterville are two of the best teams in 3A this year and if they make the quarterfinals would give us one fantastic game, and we can't forget that these two schools have some history after last years playoff game. Carterville was beating Greenville soundly until the Carterville QB was "questionably" injured which in turn pretty much shutdown the Lions offense and helped Greenville get back in the game and eventually the win. I for one am really hoping that we get to see this game! One team we can't count out is the other Mt. Carmel, this version being the Golden Aces of Mt. Carmel, Illinois. The Aces, who were kicked out of the North Egypt Conference years ago, are now members of the Big 8 Conference in Indiana. The Aces are making their 35th overall playoff appearance and could be primed for a nice post season run.
