Virginia commitment listening to SEC overtures

Demeitre Brim committed to Virginia in April, and he still intends to sign with the Cavaliers.

However, he's not shutting the door on other suitors, and Ole Miss is one of several schools working to get into the mix for his signature.

Brim, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound safety from Lakeland (Victory Christian Academy), Fla., said Ole Miss is "expressing a high interest in me right now," adding that he and Rebels safeties coach/recruiting coordinator Chris Vaughn have visited on the phone on several occasions.

"He said he's impressed with my athletic ability and my size," Brim said. "He said he thinks I can get to the next level. They seem highly impressed."

Brim, who also has offers from Florida Atlantic, Georgia Southern, Tulane and Western Kentucky, said he's listening to Vaughn, but leaving the ultimate decision to a higher power.

"I'm pretty much praying on my decisions all the way to February," Brim said. "I plan to go to a couple of camps just to stay competitive. I'm verbally committed to Virginia but I'm praying."

Brim said he's planning to visit Virginia this summer. However, he might make it to Ole Miss as well. His father's side of his family is having a reunion in Macon, Miss., later this summer, and Brim might make the two-hour trip to Oxford to check out the Rebels' program. If Ole Miss offers, Brim said, he'd have some serious thinking to do.

"Everybody knows the SEC is the biggest and the toughest conference," Brim said. "I always dreamed of playing in the SEC. I'd pray on it and whatever fits me and my family the best, that's what I'll do."

In the meantime, Brim is focusing on his senior season, hoping to prove to skeptics that he is as talented as some of the more highly recruited players in the Sunshine State.

"I try to get to a lot of people and a lot of coaches that I have played at the highest level," said Brim, who played at Haines City before transferring to Victory Christian. "I plan on showcasing and doing even better this year. I plan on showing I should be higher ranked."
