"We are very proud of Ruben," Glenbard West head coach Chad Hetlett said moments ago. "He was able to qualify and is at NIU right now and on the team. He was able to really buckle down the last year or so and take care of his academics. He's another example of a player using football as a gateway to bigger and better things."
Dunbar, who was ranked as a three star prospect in the Class of 2013 could be a huge addition to the NIU Huskies per Hetlett.
"Ruben is a 6-foot-3, 265 pound freak of nature. He hasn't even begun to scratch the surface of just how good of a player he can be at the college level. He has all of the tools your looking for in a defensive linemen. He's a very quiet and shy personality yet once he hits the field he's a totally different kid. He's also an intelligent kid and people need to realize that he needed to makeup some poor grades early on in his high school career. He understood his situation, didn't back away from it and went to work."
Hetlett also praised the Northern Illinois staff for staying with Dunbar all through his recruiting process.
"The coaches at NIU really stuck with Ruben all along and never wavered. They did their homework and understood his situation. Ruben will get a good education at NIU plus he's going to play for a great program. The bigger guys hung in and offered him early but in the end they all moved on. NIU really did a great job with Ruben and will now get a great kid and a great player."
Dunbar will be a greyshirt recruit this fall for the NIU Huskies, meaning he will be on the roster and practice with the team but won't play in any games in 2013. Dunbar will be added on scholarship in the spring and his scholarship will count towards the Huskies Class of 2014 recruiting class.
Ruben Dunbar is committed to Northern Illinois University.
