DB Aitken jumps in with NIU
So far this weekend has been a recruiting bonanza for the Northern Illinois University Huskies and head coach Rod Carey.
Chicago (IL) Kenwood junior cornerback recruit Mark Aitken (5-foot-8, 175 pounds) became the NIU Huskies fourth known in-state pledge and the fifth known overall commitment in it's Class of 2019. Aitken, who added his first offer from NIU on Saturday announced his decision early Sunday morning via his Twitter account. Aitken discusses his decision here.
"NIU is close to home and I have a really close relationship with all of the coaches at NIU," Aitken said. "I just felt like NIU is the place for me and I wanted to secure my spot so I committed."
So why did Aitken give the NIU Huskies his verbal commitment?
"NIU just loves me and loves what I can bring to the team. I just feel like NIU is a place where I can prosper athletically and academically. NIU would allow me to do things I would love to do in my life in the future. It's a great fit for me."
Aitken, who is also teammates with recent NIU pledges Raby DB Romel Gaston and Solorio WR Messiah Travis on HeroH 7on7 team out of Chicago, admitted his relationship with his two teammates also played a role in his decision.
"Me and those guys have a really strong connection both mentally and emotionally. I feel like we can just make each other better at NIU and also keep each other on the right track."
So why give NIU an early commitment?
"I feel like NIU is the best place for me and I wanted to secure my future early and focus less on recruiting and focus more on just getting better. I can just enjoy everything around me now."
Mark Aithen is now the fourth in state verbal commitment for NIU so far this spring. Aitken joins Solorio junior WR Messiah Travis, Raby junior defensive back Romel Gaston and Buffalo Grove junior linebacker Tom Trieb in the Huskies 2019 recruiting class.
