DB Gavin pledges to WIU

New Lenox (IL) Providence Catholic senior defensive back recruit Deshon Gavin (5-foot-11, 185 pounds) decided to end his recruiting process on Monday night and gave in-state Western Illinois University his verbal commitment. Gavin discusses his decision here.

"WIU had a recruit visit day on Sunday," Gavin said. "I had a great visit and I just felt very comfortable and at home at WIU so I committed to them on Sunday."

Gavin, who plays on both sides of the football for Providence Catholic pointed towards his visit along with his relationship with the coaches at WIU as big factors in his decision.

"I was able to take a tour of the campus and also see the facilities at WIU and the visit on Sunday was just a very fun experience. I liked WIU before the visit and after the visit it really did feel like home. I just felt really comfortable with the coaches and the other recruits. WIU brought in a few new coaches on defense and and I was able to get a good idea of the plans that WIU has for me. I also really had a good talk with head coach Charlie Fisher. Coach Fisher is a very competitive guy who is a very straight forward and serious as well. Coach Fisher wants to win and so do I and we just had a lot on common. He said that he loved how hard I competed at the NIU camp this summer and that made me a top prospect for him ."

Gavin will start off as a cornerback for WIU.

"WIU recruited me as a cornerback but they also feel that I could add more weight and develop into a safety for them down the road. WIU also said that they liked me athleticism and that they might consider getting me some touches on the offensive side of the football."

Gavin also considered several other options but in the end was ready to pledge to WIU.

"Several bigger schools like NIU, Miami of Ohio and Indians all wanted me to wait and they wanted to see my early senior tape before they would offer me. I just felt like it wasn't a good idea to wait when WIU already offered me and had a plan for me. I'm just very blessed and excited about my decision."

Deshon Gavin is verbally committed to WIU.
