WR Travis pledges to NIU

Chicago (IL) Solorio junior athlete recruit Messiah Travis (5-foot-11, 175 pounds) decided to give in-state Northern Illinois University his verbal commitment earlier this afternoon. Travis talks about his pledge to the NIU Huskies here.

"It was definitely a hard decision but I'm staying home," Travis said. "Going to NIU and playing for the Huskies is a great feeling and I'm just really happy about my decision."

Travis, who was recruited by NIU as a wide receiver filled us in on why he gave the Huskies his early verbal commitment.

"I like a lot of what NIU has to offer. Getting to play and go to school close to home at NIU was really important to me. I'm really close with my family. It will allow my Mom and my Dad to come and see me play in college. NIU also recruited me really hard right out of the gates and NIU was my first offer. NIU really made me feel wanted and like I was needed there. NIU has also been doing some good things, they win a lot of games and I can also get a good education. It's just really an exciting feeling."

Travis was originally planning to wait on making a decision but felt that now was the right time for him.

"I was going to wait until the summer to make a decision but I also wanted to just get the pressure off and not have to worry about recruiting. I was getting recruited pretty hard by schools like Western Michigan and some others like Toledo and ISU. I knew that NIU was the best fit and the right place for me so I decided to commit ."

Travis , who played receiver, defensive back and also returned kicks for Solorio in 2017 will also be focused on one position in college.

"I feel that my best position is receiver. NIU very early on asked me which position I liked to play best and for me it's definitely receiver. I've always been a versatile player and I'll always play anywhere to help the team. It just feels good to have that comfort level in getting to stay at receiver in college."

Messiah Travis is verbally committed to NIU.
