LB Weerts is enjoying the ride

Batavia (Ill.) junior inside linebacker prospect Luke Weerts (6-foot-2, 220 pounds) has been enjoying the Bulldogs post-season celebrations as Batavia captured the 2017 Class 7A state football title. Weerts recaps his season along with looking ahead in this update.

"It's been fun ever sine we won the state title," Weerts said. "It seems like everyone in town will stop you to say congratulations. We had such great fan support all season long from the entire town and it's still going on now."

So when did Weerts truly feel that the Bulldogs had a real chance of winning a state title?.

"I think it started to hit us after the win over Wheaton North. We had a really hard game, fell behind early then rallied back for the win. Something just clicked for us in that game and I think everyone started to really believe that we could win it all."

Weerts also reflected back on his just completed junior season.

"I felt like I was able to make the adjustment from playing defensive end to inside linebacker pretty well. I'm already back in the weight room now and I'll start my speed training soon and I'm also focused hard on school with finals coming up soon. I'm looking at improving my overall speed this off season and I want to be more explosive playing inside linebacker. I'm also planning to run track in the spring."

Weerts also recapped his latest recruiting news.

"Both the coaches from NIU and also Western Michigan have been in school over the last week or so. Also a few new schools like SIU have started to follow me on Twitter."
