Background on Antwaan Randle El: Was a tremendous three sport athlete at Thornton Township and arguably one of the most electric signal callers from the Land of Lincoln over the past 20 plus years.
Was drafted out of high school by the Chicago Cubs but turned down the MLB to attended Indiana University on a football scholarship. Also was a standout point guard on the Thornton Township basketball team, as team that featured NFL standout Napoleon Harris, NBA center Melvin Ely and NFL wide receiver Tai Streets.
Randle El went on to shine at Indiana. Randle El was at Indiana from 1998 to 2001 and was named as the 1998 Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Randle El would also at the time become the first quarterback to throw for 40 career touchdowns and run for 40 career touchdowns. In 2000, Penn State coach Joe Paterno said of Randle El, "He is just the whole offense. It is scary to watch him. He is so quick that if you don't get on him and you wait for him to pitch the ball, he will take off on you. He is just an amazing athlete. I don't know how you get ready for him." Randle El while at Indiana also played basketball for Bobby Knight during the 1998-99 season. Randle El also played baseball for the Hoosier in the 2000 season.
Antwaan Randle El was a second round pick (62nd overall) by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2000 NFL Draft. Randle El was converted from a quarterback to a wide receiver/kick returner for the Steelers as well as being a backup quarterback and a "Wildcat" option in the Steelers offense. Randle El played for the Steelers from 2002 to 2005 then signed a deal with the Washington Redskins and played for the Redskins from 2005 thru 2009. In 2010 Randle El returned to the Steelers and signed a three year deal.
EDGY's thoughts on Antwaan Randle El Still to this day I would rank Anywaan Randle El as one of the Top 5 most electric players I've ever seen on a high school football field in Illinois. Randle El was just a live wire type who had an uncanny ability to break tackles when it seemed to be nearly impossible to break them. Randle El was a slick runner and a nearly impossible player to wrap up in the open field. His speed and athleticism remains with him even to this day.
Also Randle El was as good of a basketball player and baseball player as he was a football player. I remember watching him on the court several times and like on the gridiron his speed and athleticism along with his smarts on the court was highly impressive.
Randle El actually was recruited somewhat lightly coming out to Thornton because several schools felt that Randle El was "too small" to play at the major college level. Yet those who really saw the skills and abilities of Randle El knew that he offered so much that size was a minimal concern.
Randle El to this day still returns to Thornton Township in Harvey and remains an active alumnus.
Randle El is married and is the father of five children.
Best of luck to Antwaan Randle El this Sunday in Super Bowl XLV.
